  • Kessler-Ward: Issues Over Appointment Of Local Officials

By Jake Donovan - For the first time since agreeing to participate in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, Team Mikkel Kessler has come to realize just how advantageous it has become for undefeated challenger Andre Ward to have this weekend’s fight take place in his hometown.

He’s already traveling some 5,500 miles from his native Denmark to defend his alphabet super middleweight title at the Oracle Arena in Oakland (Saturday, SHOWTIME, 10PM ET/PT). From the moment the fight was signed, Kessler hardly figured to see a friendly face among what figures to be a rabid crown on hand in support of their favorite son.

If the beleaguered California State Athletic Commission, whom presides over this weekend’s card, has their way, he also shouldn’t expect to be granted neutrality among the referee or at least two of the three judges.

News leaked out to the Kessler camp early Wednesday morning that a conflict exists as the officials were named for this weekend’s bout. Assigned as the third man for this contest will be Jack Reiss of California. The three ringside judges are Steve English (California), Steve Morrow (California) and Stanley Christodoulou (South Africa).

On the surface, there is little in the say of suspect credentials among any of the four officials, all of whom have proven to be capable at what they do. If anything, Christodoulou – the one neutral judge among the group - has greater ties to the tournament than any of the three local officials.

The veteran official served ringside for Kessler’s knockout over Gusmyr Perdomo, a bout that served as a prelude to the Super Six. He was also one of the three official judges for Arthur Abraham’s 12th round knockout of Jermain Taylor in last month’s tournament opener.

What is of greater concern to Team Kessler is not so much the credentials of the three local officials, but the fact that they are… local. [details]

Interesting - it was written in the Super Six contract that two judges and the referee not be local officials.

Then, if Kessler pulls out, he has no worries, and Sauerland can sue Goossen for violating the contract.

Quite a few commission try to pull this stunt. I can understand a fight where neither fighter is from that state (much less the very town in which the fight takes place). But any significant fight featuring a home state/house fighter should always feature neutral officials.

I might be backwards on my thinking this, but I have less of a problem with the referee being from the same state as one of the fighters, then I do with the three judges. If anything, a referee should be more familiar with the fighters, whereas judges are specifically instructed to view fights with blinders on.

If the judges aren't changed Kessler would be forced to knock out Ward. At the very least make it a non-title fight, don't risk it on these corrupt officials.

          Good stuff Jake.

So are we to assume that the fight is either gonna get called off or the officials replaced?

One or the other? Or will Kessler go through w/ it if things stay this way?

Worst case scenario is that it becomes a non-title fight, though my best guess is that someone will eventually blink. There's no way the fight isn't happening. Changing at least one official should be enough to do the trick.

At this point, all we need is for Palle to once again swoop in with his "Kessler's mine and I'm suing the world" rant, and this fight will have all the drama you need.

It's freakin' bull****! They need to find some objective officials. It's completely outragous. This has to be fixed.

Good, that would suck if it got called off.

Not a robbery, plus, if I remember correctly, they had neutral judges in that one.

Kessler needs a k.o to win this though.
