I even made a thread about 141-147 being a welterweight fight...BUT when I think about it, 147 is the limit. So a true welterweight fight should allow a welterweight to come in at the limit.
If you reduce the "welterweight" max of 147lbs, then the fighter who is the welterweight doesn't get a chance to be a full muscled welterweight...especially if they've been weighing 146-147 for years.
Now yes these guys are pros, and the best man will win...however having 144-145 as catch weight stipulations to accommodate the smaller fighter who is moving up and supposedly trying to accomplish a feat of beating a "full fledged" welterweight, kind of takes a bit of sting off...especially if it keeps going on...that's like
Roach even said himself in a recent interview that they wanted to show Cotto that Pacman was a FULL FLEDGED welterweight at "147lbs" (those were his words)...yet they still forced Cotto who is a full welterweight to be limited (and a couple/few pounds mean a lot with these very fit fighters)
Nontheless, Pacman was just the better fighter vs Cotto...but I think that if they want to sell Manny as this solid, full fledged welterweight vs other welterweights, they should allow the natural welterweights to have their limits...
When Floyd moved up to face Oscar DelaHoya...he didn't ask Oscar to meet him at 151 or 152...Oscar had his comfortable 154 and Mayweather had his comfortable 150...if Manny wants his 144, then let the true welterweights have their 147.
