  • George Foreman - do you love him?

"I'm so proud of it, I put my NAME on it!!"

Foreman is presented as a loveable figure these days, in stark contrast to the stern younger George. Yet while I don't believe Big George was ever as nasty as the myth tries to convince you he was (like Liston, they both "ring monsters" have a dry wit in footage) I'm not sure Big George is quite sincere either.

So is Big George now a lovable bear? Or is he just a bit of an egotist with a deep-rooted chip on his shoulder over Zaire that just won't go away and tries to pretend to be everyone's friend?

What goes on in the George cranium? What's with calling the majority of his ten kids "George Foreman" - even the girls? And what's Larry Holmes's beef with it all?

    What say you?

I've seen George in interviews back in the 70's, and he didn't really appear to be a bad person, not even like he was trying to put up a front. I did see him give some of his opponents some nasty looks, and stand over a couple of them after KOing them, but other than that, I think the only chip he ever had on his shoulder was over the black movement being angry over him not raising his fist at the olympics after his victory. Given the circumstances surrounding his upbringing, I think he could have been alot worse.

I think he had that chip on his shoulder about Zaire, but now that he handled his business with Moorer, I think he laid that to rest.

However I think that when he sees Ali with his affliction, deep inside he tells himself "Look at Ali now, I know I won that fight. I won that fight, look at how Ali is now." so it likely hasn't been totally put to rest. If I were George I wouldn't even visit Ali, because he's really the reason Ali is like that, those shots George was landing were brutal, but the crowd just kept Ali on his feet.

george felt that for the first tiem in his life when he fought moorer, and hopefully he doesn't fight larry holmes, because i feel that he would seriously put holmes away, and holmes is someone boxing needs

I agree, I don't think George gave a **** as much about being black as he was proud to have been able to represent the U.S. the way he did, not to mention coming from nothing and ending up in the Olympics! I can really appreciate the strength of character that had to have taken. That's why I like George. He wasn't the fastest, or the most skilled, but his raw power and determination, even in defeat, are undeniable.

Don't you be jumpin' on George, now. He's my guy

I like George. Always have, always will. He's not that bright, but he's got a good, sunny disposition, a good sense of humor, and a wisdom that only years and humility can teach you. And he was one of the baddest muthers on the planet at one time

....I like George and always have liked him. It's a shame he didn't knock Ali's frickin head off that night. As far as likable people go I will take big George over Ali any day of the week.
