You Think You Know Boxing? Take The Quiz! (Part One)
    by Scott Mason

I can't tell you how many people I've run into recently who end up trying to talk boxing with me when they find out I write for a boxing website. Sometimes it can be fun, but more often than not, it just ends up being annoying when I am bombarded with little nuggets of brilliance like, "I really think Mike Tyson could have taken Muhammad Ali in his prime" or "Does Sugar Ray Leonard still box?"

So, after many frustrating conversations with people who claim to be boxing fans, I've devised a quiz that will tell me if somebody truly is a real boxing fan. I've split it up into numerous installments and sporadically, more installments will be released to further test just how much you know about the crazy sport of boxing. Think you're a real fan? Take installment one of the quiz and see how you do.

    1. In 2004, Roy Jones proved he was the pound for pound greatest fighter of all time by.......
    (A) Constantly displaying his blinding speed
    (B) Avoiding punches like few others can
    (C) Dominating every opponent within his realm
    (D) Getting knocked cold in consecutive fights against Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson

    2. Highly regarded prospect Jermain Taylor has shown he is clearly ready for a fight with middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins based on which of the following.......
    (A) His lack of having faced any top 10 middleweights
    (B) His defensive flaws like dropping his right when jabbing and dropping his left to his chest after jabbing
    (C) His nervous stammering when asked if he was ready to be the king of the middleweights
    (D) Jermain Taylor has not, in any way, shown that he is ready for a fight with Bernard Hopkins

    3. James Toney is a baaaaaaaad man. We know this because......
    (A) He failed to knock out an out of shape, blown up cruiserweight on national television
    (B) He knocked a microphone out of the hands of the ultra-tough Jim Gray
    (C) He is always in tip-top shape
    (D) He repeatedly says so in all of his trash talk filled interviews

    4. Manny Pacquaio, one of boxing's newest stars and most exciting fighters, recently showed what a true warrior and sportsman he is by......
    (A) Avenging his controversial draw with Juan Manuel Marquez by knocking him out in a rematch
    (B) Beating fellow Asian title holder Injin Chi in a fight of the year candidate
    (C) Thrashing the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera again, forcing his corner to throw in the towel a second time
    (D) Getting knocked around the ring and clearly beaten by Erik Morales and blaming the loss on a pair of boxing gloves

    5. Bernard Hopkins has clearly begun to slip and father time is starting to catch up with him. We know this because......
    (A) He became the first fighter to ever stop future hall of famer Oscar De La Hoya
    (B) He completely dominated consensus number one contrender, Howard Eastman
    (C) He still comes into every fight in the absolute best shape humanly possible
    (D) Felix Trinidad's fans keep shouting it from the rooftops because they have never gotten over the thrashing Hopkins gave their idol on September 29, 2001

    6. After resurrecting his career by beating Erik Morales in the third fight of their trilogy, Marco Antonio Barrera said he wanted to fight the best so he could prove he was still on top of his game. He went about this by.....
    (A) Seeking a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in an attempt to avenge his earlier loss
    (B) Dropping back down to 126 to fight WBA/IBF featherweight title holder, Juan Manuel Marquez
    (C) Signing to fight Olympic gold medalist and former 130 pound title holder, Joel Casamayor
    (D) Charging the public $40 to watch him fight some guy nobody has ever heard of

    7. Showtime is America's #1 Boxing Network. They have decided to prove this by staging a pay per view featuring which of the following marquee matchups:
    (A) Felix Trinidad vs Oscar De La Hoya II
    (B) Bernard Hopkins vs Roy Jones Jr II
    (C) Marco Antonio Barrera vs Erik Morales IV
    (D) A 42 year old ex-champ who hasn't won a big fight in over a decade vs A 34 year old journeyman whose only claim to fame is that he beat Arturo Gatti six years ago

    8. Evander Holyfield continues to box because he says he believes he can once again unify the heavyweight title. He has shown that his dream is still very much alive by.......
    (A) Swinging at air all night against the feather fisted Chris Byrd
    (B) Taking a beating at the hands of former middleweight, James Toney
    (C) Getting dominated by career journeyman Larry Donald
    (D) Evander Holyfield needs to retire ASAP before he ends up like Muhammad Ali

    9. Many hardcore boxing fans have been calling for top Jr welterweight prospect, Miguel Cotto, to step up in competition and face WBA title holder Vivian Harris. Cotto's promoter, Bob Arum, has shown how interested he is in this fight taking place by......
    (A) Telling the boxing press that Cotto would gladly face Harris
    (B) Describing to the boxing press that they tried to put the fight together but Harris was unreasonable in negotiations
    (C) Being made to look like a fool and a liar when it was discovered that no negotiations ever took place and he had, in fact, never even contacted Harris
    (D) Miguel Cotto will fight Vivian Harris when pigs fly

    10. The heavyweight division is in great shape. This is evidenced by the fact that two of the three title holders in the division arguably lost recently to.......
    (A) A re-dedicated and rejuvinated Mike Tyson, who looked the best he has in years
    (B) Lennox Lewis, who returned from retirement to reclaim his throne
    (C) Ike Ibeabuchi, who was paroled from prison, returned to his previous form, and viciously destroyed everybody in his path
    (D) A guy in his mid-30's who had been retired for nearly four years and whose most famous performances in the ring consisted of being disqualified twice for excessive low blows, quitting after having his jaw broken by Mike Tyson, strangely quitting against Michael Grant in the 10th round of a fight he was winning, and getting knocked out in the first round by Lennox Lewis
