How Popular was Arturo Gatti before Micky Ward?

I personally have not been a boxing fan for a very long time.

Has Gatti been a popular fighter for a long time or has it only been since Micky Ward? Those fights could make a nobody a superstar as far as I'm concerned.

he has always been HBO and larry merchants poster boy. He has been a popular fighter since the ivan robinson and tracy patterson fights as the comeback kid.
