The ref should have stopped this fight earlier. But there were people in Cotto's corner that bore an even greater responsibility to Miguel. Joe Santiago, turn in your punch mitts! This is YOUR fighter. YOU are ultimately responsible for his career and, more importantly, his health.
Cotto was getting busted up in there. If you think it looks bad on TV, even in hi-def, it looks worse live. I don't know where Miguel's trainer's head was at. Maybe he was holding such a grudge against Freddie Roach that he wanted to make him eat his words at all costs.
There came a point, long before the (un)merciful stoppage, where it became clear that Cotto stood NO CHANCE of winning the fight against Manny. When that point was reached, SOMEONE'S finger should have been hovering over the "eject" button. Joe Santiago, you were asleep at the wheel!
