Gennady Golovkin to face Ishe Smith

Another major fight has been added to Universum Box-Promotion’s November 21 world title tripleheader at the Sparkassen Arena in Kiel, Germany. Spotlight Boxing’s unbeaten middleweight shooting star Gennady Golovkin (17-0, 14 KOs), rated #1 in the WBC and WBO and #2 by the WBA, will defend his WBO Intercontinental belt against veteran Ishe Smith (21-4, 9 KOs).

Also on the undercard will be 2008 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist Rachim Chachkiev in his second pro fight against 30-fight veteran Denis Solomko, spectacular flyweight Pal “Pimpa” Bedak (5-0, 3 KOs) against Lahcene Zemmouri (17-12-1, 10 KOs), plus popular heavyweight Christian Hammer.

The three world title fights feature the huge cruiserweight showdown between unbeaten WBO light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei (30-0, 17 KOs) and WBC cruiserweight champion Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-1-1, 10 KOs), plus WBC interim super featherweight Humberto Gutierrez (26-1-1, 19 KOs) defending against Vitali Tajbert (17-1), and super middleweight contenders Dimitri Sartison (25-1, 16 KOs) and Stjepan Bozic (23-3, 14 KOs) colliding for the WBA 168lb championship that was vacated when Mikkel Kessler was named WBA super champion.

For those who do not know so much about Gennady Golovkin here's what he achieved as an amateur boxer:

    • 2000 won the Junior World Champioships in Budapest, Hungary as a Light Welterweight.
    • 2002 won the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea as a Light Middleweight.
    • 2003 won the World Championships in ****kok, Thailand as a Middleweight.
    • 2004 Middleweight Olympic Silver Medalist as a member of the Kazakhstani Olympic Team

Remarkable wins in the amateur ranks:
Defeated Andre Dirrell (USA) 23-18 in the 2004 Middleweight Olympic Games

Won over Lucian Bute ( IBF Super Middleweight champion) by a 4th RD KO in the
    2003 World Championships in ****kok

Below a video with highlights from a fight reflecting his handspeed

The crafty Ishe Smith will be an excellent test for Gennady Golovkin.

If he stops Ishe, then surely he'll be in line for a title shot or at least a title eliminator in 2010. Spotlight (run by Kohl's son-in-law) seems to be moving him too slowly, and he should have had a few more fights by now, while they seemed more interested in getting the mediocre Zbik an interim title shot.

All these fights are on the same card? Golovkin, Chakhiev, & Erdei. Germany pwns US when it comes to depth on their fight cards.

hope i can find a stream for this.

and man are Chakhiev and Pulev being brought along quick, i hope Glazkov doesn't take too long.

Along with guys like Povetkin,Tszyu (hope Korobov isn't brought along too slow)it goes to show that if you have a deep Amateur backround you don't need to screw around putting fluff wins on your record.

Then again you can always have a Alekseev/Ramirez or Vova/Purrity situation but in terms of skill they're fine. Just focus on that cardio and they can be title ready in 2 or 3 years

well ****, I hadn't seen thread until now and got all excited about Golovkin facing SMith. Only to find out Ishe got injured. He has an OK replacment. But I really wanted to see him against Smith. Btw, it's not his handspeed that impresses me, it's the angles he uses and his offensive creativity. I like this kid. I really like this card. And the fact that Erdei finally gave up on what was the worst championship reign in the history of the sport. Never defending against a top 15 rated light heavyweight. He is a much better fighter than that and he should be able to outbox Fragomeni handily.
