It's not an excuse when it's the truth. Which is why knowledgable boxing fans distiguish between prime, past-prime, and shot to begin with. Holmes doesn't get any credit for beating a shot Ali. Marciano doesn't get any credit for beating a shot Louis. Camacho doesn't get any credit for beating a shot Duran. Neither do those losing fighters get diminished because they lost after they were shot.
