What tactics should Ward/Kessler use

Kessler will most likey fight this fight they way he did against Mundine. He'll stalk and cut off the ring, while jabbing a lot, especially to the body early. I don't think he'll actually throw many right hands early to be honest. He won't throw them until he's timed Ward or until Ward has slowed a bit from the accumulation of jabs to the body.
Ward will probably fight this fight from either the outside or on the inside, but he won't stay in the pocket. He'll show Kessler a lot of lateral movement, and come in and out quickly to land. I can also see him taking a step forward and smothering Kessler's punches and working on the inside or to clinch.
There's more to it than this, but it's pretty much the jist of it, IMO. -

im looking for kessler too start slower than usual with ward more active in his punch output and movements, clinching when necessary
i think kessler will start too time him around the 4th round, slowly starting too throw/land more
thats when it gets really interesting!Comment

Another element that's intriguing here is how they'll adjust. Ward has shown the ability to adjust, but against lesser opponents.ye no doubt this is a real intriguing fight, the most complex of the first 3 in the tourney

The only time Kessler has ever really had to adjust was against Calzaghe, and he couldn't. But then again, he was fighting Calzaghe.Comment

ye alot of ward fans have brought the calzaghe fight up as a reason against kessler
if ward can adapt that well and constantly throw punches from weird ass angles whilst taking those meaty counters kessler was landing flush on the chin,he deserves too winComment

The thing is, Ward was pretty accurate when he described Kessler; he's a typical European fighter with a litte bit of extra flare.
He's more rythmic than most, but the essentials--stand straight up, jab, everything in range--are all the same. If Ward can show him awkward angles and work the body or get on the inside for twelve rounds, he may just pull off the upset. However, that's if Kessler can't adapt to what he's doing.
Like I said, it's very interesting and much closer than many are predicting.Last edited by Shadows; 11-11-2009, 06:26 PM.Comment
