Ted "Kid" Lewis & Jack Britton

Why is it that Ted "Kid" Lewis seems to be held in higher regard by just about every boxing historian when Britton actually got the better of him over the course of their rivalry, and, as far as I can see, fought and beat more better fighters than Lewis?

Just looking for someone to educate me a bit on the two and their respective historical standings.
