I see this all the time on these forums, people saying so and so is not American. So, I'd like to know what qualifies you as an American fighter. Do you consider a fighter like Andre Berto to be American even though he wasn't born in America or do you consider all African-Americans not to be American because their roots go back to Africa? To me, you are American if you are born on American soil or lived here majority of your life. I consider Andre Berto an American fighter.
What classifies you as an American fighter?

You can say that you are an American fighter is anyone that is a citizen. I just wanted to know how everyone feels because I hear bull **** like African Americans aren't American, even when they are born here! If that logic holds true, no one is American because most whites are of European decent.Comment

Actually, I am asking this question because a lot of Europeans are bad mouthing Americans and discrediting their history in the sport.Originally posted by manglerOnly cats who bring this **** up are Mr boat buyer's ****suckers who try to **** on Pac. Nobody else gives a ****.Comment

I believe he was born in Haiti. Either way if you were born here or lived here most of your life you should probably be considered American. Is Lennox Lewis ever considered a great Canadian champion? Wheres the line though? What about a fighter that has been a U.S citizen for only 4 years and lived in lets say Russia for 20 years.Comment

I don't know who you hear that from...perhaps a KKK forum or some otherwise lifeless biggot online? But...You can say that you are an American fighter is anyone that is a citizen. Maybe you need to modify your own viewpoint as well.
Food for thought.Comment

Well, it's tough to say. You could ask the question of what nationality Tszyu and Lewis really are, or even Bob Fitzsimmons. They all held multiple passports or are/were citizens of two or more countries.Comment

there is no realy way to classify one american or not, unless you look at the legal way, which is via citizenship.
boxing wise, the way i would classify a boxer would be as the following:
if born and raised in US - of course = American
if came to US as a child and came thru US systems = American
if came to US as an adult (18+) then you can lean to not being American (boxing wise only).
For just about everything else - the best gauge is their accent, if they sounds american it normally means they are (as they would have had to come to the US at a young age)....
PS - you may get a fighter who was born and raised in US but represents another country at Olympics, but that means jack ****, just exploiting an opportunity.Comment
