Listening to my local ESPN radio affiliate I was thrilled to hear that Jim Lampley was going to be on. I live in Connecticut and Lampley is obviously here for the Dawson-Johnson fight. They were speaking about the fight and Lampley said:
"Joe Calzaghe blatantly ducked Glen Johnson on a number of occasions, and with good reason. Johnson is the type fighter that no one wants to fight. So I give Chad Dawson a lot of credit for being willing to fight Johnson two times."
I was shocked at how candid Lampley was. It was great to hear him talk boxing without his HBO hat on.
Lampley also was asked about if Roy Jones is still a marketable fighter for boxing fans, and replied:
"I don't know why" ..... He continued to actually say, "Hopkins-Jones 2 doesn't interest me. Maybe 10 years ago it did, but their first fight wasn't exactly a barn burner" .... "But they're names that people know"
The last question posted to Lampley was the old "Is boxing dead?" question, and Lampley became super passionate. His response to the question of "Is MMA gaining ground and taking over boxing":
"I only have a three word reply to that question.......Only in America!"
He continued to talk about the growing international feel to boxing and the improvement of international fighters. He spoke greatly of fighters like the Klitchckos and Pacquiao.
"Boxing is the third most popular sport in the world. It goes Soccer, whatever your local sport is whether it be snookers or NFL football, and then Boxing"
I thought this was a great candid interview with Lampley who expressed his true feelings without having to spin it for HBO. Great job by the interviewer too, Jason Page of "The Backpage" on ESPN Radio 1410 in Hartford. I will post the link to the podcast once it's available but I just heard this 25 minutes ago.
