      why couldn't cotto touch him?

if gato is twice as slow as cotto, then cotto should've manhandled him so that he would quit camp instead of kicking him out.

he might not be credible but there are 2 sides to every story.

sparring isn't about hurting your partner or making him quit. didn't you know that?

anyway, lets look at those two sides of the story:

side 1: a WW champ whose only loss has a question mark. #5-#8 p4p on every list.

side 2: a WW chump that lost by horrible KO to a guy that cotto made quit to save himself from the beating he was taking

if you REALLY think that cotto couldn't handle gato, then you must believe in roach's 1st round KO prediction

          Yeah 2 chances........he failed didn't he? A draw is not a win......

i'm just saying, why not just punish gato in the ring and let him leave camp instead of firing him...

you know gato is only supposed to be in the ring for several rounds... well, make gato go the full amount of rounds and teach him a lesson.

so pacquiao has failed 5 times in his career instead of 3?

a draw may not be a win, but it isn't failure either

btw, that "win" was very questionable. even penalosa and donaire gave it to marquez, and that says a lot. close fight? yeah. could've gone either way? yeah. controvesial? yeah.

a rubber match would've settled things once and for all (unless marquez won a close fight), but now's too late for that

What lesson? I, Miguel Cotto, two-division champ and one of the best fighters in the world, can beat Francisco Figeroa in sparring? How old are you?

Not to worry, Cotto's going to lose to a guy who weighed a 106lbs when he was 15.

Yes I quite agree. Most of the posters here don't seem to realise the purpose of a sparring partner. He is selected, not because of his unbeaten record, and not just because he is a southpaw, or short or tall or whatever.

His main attribute is is his ability to follow the instructions of the trainer, who wants him to simulate certain moves or punches that will be expected from the actual opponent on fight night.

If he can't take meaningful direction, it doesn't matter how good he is.In other words much of the sparring could be described as a series of "chess" movements, with live, full sized human chessmen making moves, and counter-moves.

If they go off the script and start fighting, there's a good chance that the principal could get cut, ot bruised, sprained etc, ruining a multi-million dollar business deal-which is what the modern-day fight has become.

It probably always was something like that.

Finally a person who understands boxing. This is what I have been thinking about the whole gato situation.
