Larry Holmes "Muhammad Ali's boxing skills are overrated"

I just saw the documentary "Thrilla in Manilla"......there was a segment in which Larry Holmes said "Ali's boxing skills are overrated"....i just want to know your opinions...

in my opinion i think Larry Holmes is still bitter that he had to fight in the shadow of Ali, also i'd like to say that the documentary was heavily biased towards Ali....the entire documentary was made to show Ali in a bad light and if anyone here has seen it i think you would agree with me on this

and as for Ali's boxing skills...lets assess them...The fastest puncher in heavyweight history, the greatest footwork in boxing history (in his prime), the greatest jab in heavyweight history, tremendous defence off the ropes(rope-a-dope) against foreman and Frazier in the 3rd fight......best combination's in heavyweight history.....Sorry Larry but your claims go against all logic and fact, thus making you a ****head

well was it "recent holmes" or holmes around that fight that said that? if so, yeah he's bitter.but i'd say his jab was better than ali's.best combo puncher was joe louis.bout the footwork and defense you're on point though.

      They are.

Ali did a lot of things fundamentally wrong and got away with them early on because of his speed.

When his speed went he was a sitting duck.

      Larry's right.

ALI and RJJ are comparable as their styles fit them and only them, because it relies heavily on their natural phsycial abli******.

But thats also what makes them ATGs. If they were fundamentally correct and textbook, their styles would be just like in the amateurs. A regular textbook boxer wouldnt be able to follow the book to beat them. It's almost like fighting broken rthym. There's a point where you have to box outside the textbook to be a winner.

Their physical gifts, styles, and talents set them apart from pure textbook "boxers".

Kind a reminds of Manny Pacquiao. Never was he a conventionally good boxer. His style is so off and so wierd and he throws the same punches over and over. Hahaha.

A lot of the guys with incredible athletic advantages tend to do things wrong fundamentally. That unconventional style is a big part of those fighters' success though, Ali might not be so good if he tried to fit the mold of a fundamentally sound fighter.

Holmes is probably right about Alis skills. Its just that Ali was a great athlete and that is why he was succesful. A bit like JC. Ali had speed and when youve got this it makes everything a bit easier.

his exact words were "Ali is a great man, done many fantastic things, but is overrated, overrated as far as boxing ability and skills go"
