    New to the Boxing Scene

    Hey guys, WPC here.

I thought I'd introduce myself, then get into my questions. I am 16 years old, and me and a couple buddies are slowly starting to become interested in boxing. With a background of Karate and Krav Manga, martial arts and competition sparring aren't new things to me.

Earlier this week I bought a pair of Everest 14 oz training gloves, and everest gel handwraps. I also bought a mouthguard specifically made for braces which I will have off in approximately three months.

I was wondering what else I need to do. I just joined a boxing gym that is close to me, and will be training there three times a week, and on the off days doing strength routines and conditioning.

Thanks for all the informations you guys have all helped collect, I'm enjoying it.

      sup dude...

keep in mind that Martial arts doesn't necessarily translate to boxing skills. Alot of times they actually clash. Trust me, I try to do both and have alot of trouble meshing styles. You gotta really think about it otherwise they will just end up counteracting each other, and your martial art experience will be useless in boxing.

For one thing, martial arts wants you to hold structure out in front of you with your hands..where as boxing wants you to hold your hands in close and fill the space in front of you with your jab. difference

Also...stances. Your trainer will get on that ass if your stance looks like a karate stance. they generally want you to stand more square, than the karate stance..which is one leg behind the other...

Also.. karate throws from the waist alot... boxing wants you to throw from higher up, generally.

be prepared to start all over again...

stay away from the gel handwraps man get some real ones and learn to wrap the right way.
Do this while your young so you wont get bad wrists and hands.
Also you may want to post this kind of stuff in the training section. alot of people will flame you for doing it in Non Stop Boxing.
