I think you have a skewered impression of British people based on the people who get drunk and attend Ricky Hatton fights.
Britain embraces almost all its star boxers, the public felt like they were being sold a lie about Khan because he was being put up against crap fighters knocking them out in R.1 and coming out talking himself up. Basically, he hadn't earnt the attention he was getting at that point. He's backing it up now though, the wins over Barrera and Kotelnik are a good start at justifying the hype.
However, this is about tax and money and it's pretty pathetic of Khan blaming it on haters.
