Comments Thread For: Sliding doors: The contrasting fortunes of Terence Crawford and Errol Spence

Whenever we reflect on the 2023 welterweight superfight between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jnr, we tend to focus on how the fight ended rather than our feelings beforehand...

Honestly, Spence coming back after Crawford retired makes Errol look desperate. I know he's not really, but it gives the look like Crawford did all he had to and retired on his own terms. He's content and doesn't need it anymore (although I'm not entirely sure he doesn't come back for a 100m+ paycheck from Turki eventually).

Where now it looks like Spence is in need of either money or recognition and is coming back when he's probably going to look like serious spent goods.

Eitherway, I'm intrigued to see what kind of Spence comes back if he does finalize a fight and it happens.

      A very revisionist take.

Personally, and I know I was not alone, I doubted Spence was the same fighter as he was before his TWO car crashes. Yes he beat Ugas and looked decent enough doing it but even so ... and I sure as hell knew he wasn't in his prime at 33 years old - very few fighters are, but especially those who have not looked after themselves - and drinking and partying and then bouncing on your head down the highway at 100mph doesn't really cut it in the 'looking after yourself' stakes.

And then you had that 'rabbit in headlights' stare as he made his ring-walk - didn't want to be there.

Still, it's 3 years now by the time he fights Timmy or whoever else. That's enough time for most of his issues to have improved - well maybe not the partying, the too-long Texas drawl and major head trauma. Quite a few of these fights come down to who is least damaged has the better chance - we'll see soon enough

Am I the only person that thinks Spence will back out of the Tyszu fight ? Too me he seems like hes not all there mentally. I think another lost will put him on constant visual observation, if you ever worked in the prison, jail, or hospital it can be called (CO) / constant observation.

That wasnt just a lost but a beat down. Its not nothing new losing an 0, it isn't really that bad for most fighters but being on top and getting folded in front of the world is something serious.

Thats one reason why Canelo never wanted to fight David. He was ok with Crawford, Mayweather or Bivol boxing him to a defeat but he never wanted to get knocked out by a boxer, especially not by another Latino/ Hispanic.

        Food for thought.

We’ll never know. Spence vs Brook he was an absolute machine but against Porter not so hot post crash vs Ugas he looked amazing, like his old self then bud destroyed him. He was my fave fighter for awhile but I think his lifestyle outside the ring really put a ceiling on his career. If he comes back against any of the top guys he’s gonna get mauled

Not sure how much desire Spence still has I mean come one, years out of the ring tells me he was just languishing on the money he made instead of taking a keep busy fight all these years. Tyzu has massive desires still, but his susceptibility and Spence going to 154 has a lot of questions for both guys to answer.

Blame Al, pbc, Spence and the spence/pbc fanboys for that annihilation! Hes on The other side of the street! He brings nothing to the table! Blah blah blah

i been a fan of Crawf since 130. I knew kid had the goods. Haters HATED and made excuse after excuse on why the fight SHOULDNT happen. Then made more excuses after the accident. Mu***a should've retired then!

Crawf was brilliant in there, PERIOD. Errl got beat tf up. And Bud became new UNDISPUTED CHAMPION. Then Crawf outpunched, outclassed and embarrassed Ginger!

              Haters be damned.

You mean the brook that went up to Middleweight and got smashed by a prime GGG ? That wasn't the same Kell Brook.

No sane person with any shred of intelligence considered Crawford and Spence equals. They weren't equals in 2018 when I first told ever what would happen if they fought. They weren't equals in 2023 when certain pundits called it a "50/50 fight". Two completely different levels of fighter, and five years didn't change a thing. In fact, running and ducking made Errol's inevitable beating more certain.

Spence life style choices caught up with him. That would still have no guarantees of win but he wouldn't have become damaged like that.
