HARD HITTER AND HARD TO HIT

Naoya Inoue ranks among the top five boxers in the sport for fewest total punches and fewest power punches landed by opponents each round

Dmitry Bivol leads the way - statistically the most elusive fighter in boxing today

Floyd is the MASTER of boxing per CompuBox recorded history

Going into the Artur fights I said Top Soviet Bivol is Borderline Defensive Wizard. He'd be perfect with the slick upper body head rolls of AmeriBBC boxers

foos wanted to get smart when I said he's damn near impossible to catch with a left hook to the head [most lethal shot in the sport of boxing]. His right hand stays glued to his face holding up the phone

Like Floyd Top Soviet Bivol gets hit with the occasional jab, cross, or overhand. Their fathers were tough on them about defensive responsbility

'I was so happy about it and I was so proud of myself. I came home and I showed my dad and told him about it. He was so happy that I got it too. But, then he watched back all of my fights and he wasn't happy at all.

'He said how can they give you that award? You shouldn't have gotten that trophy because you got punched. He then showed me, you got this punch and then that punch and then this punch.

'I said to my dad but I punched him more and he said I know but it's not a good look. It's not good boxing when you are getting punched in the face. He also didn't like the fact I was a kid getting hit.

'I could land 10 punches and get hit once and he would not be happy. He always said, you continue to take punches I will take you out of boxing. I don't need a son who will hit in the head a lot. So, that lead to my style.'
Bivol Sr is a TRUE boxing fan

CompuBox is numbers that need context only 2 of the 7 listed guys have GREAT defense: Top Soviet Bivol & Shakur

Ryan ranked higher but that doesn't tell the whole story

      numbers without context are misleading

Ryan most recent fight he fought to not get ko'd after getting dropped by a Rolly hook

is that the second best defense today

Naoya can be elusive but gets trigger happy and clipped for it

number of times each guy has been dropped or legs gone funny should be factored in too when ranking defense

Buff Guy BBC Josh the GigaTyrone Of Boxing fights at heavyweight where they throw less which brings down the numbers connected on him

Bivol is impressive as we know. But is not a KO fighter. Half of his wins are by dec.
Shakur is the most defensive of the group. But is the least offensive and lacks power.
Haney fights the same way, but may have more pop. Ryan's recent performances are questionable.

The remarkable stat is here --
Inoue has a 90% KO percentage and is also a top 3-4 least hit boxer in the game.
He obviously takes a lot more offensive risks than all these guys. And was clipped a couple times last year.
But as Mayweather did in the latter half of his career,
if Inoue fights a bit more responsible now (which he did vs MJ), he's pretty much a perfect fighter.
The blend of elite power and defense.

I think we'll see more of that form here on out

in recent interview Naoya said Stephen was his best performance to date

Naoya getting hit echoes this excerpt about SUGAR ROBINSON
Some commentators have stated that Robinson was not a great defensive fighter. This is no doubt true. When one is aggressive and really goes after their opponent’s they are going to leave themselves open for counters. This is not necessarily a bad thing. When Robinson was on the attack his opponents had to worry about his full battery of offensive weapons. Robinson’s defense was his irrepressible offense, although he used his footwork, height and reach to get away from trouble when necessary.

Robinson had a great chin and his will to win is among the best. Sugar Ray was never physically knocked out in more than 200 pro fights. One can see Robinson’s gritty determination in his films. He punishes his rivals as though he is upset that they would even think that they could compete with him. He was as determined and confident as any boxing champion in history.

Ray Robinson was the archetype of a complete fighter. If one combines his polished, grand boxing style with his powerful punching and cast iron chin with a will to win unsurpassed in the annals of boxing one has a perfect fighter.
If his chin ultimately checks out, you could say Naoya is the Japanese Mini Sugar Robinson

like Ray he can one punch ko with either hand downstairs or upstairs. A very good jab that works high and low. And Naoya is able to outbox boxers and out slug punchers
What other fighter could beat you more ways than could Sugar Ray Robinson? Ray could out box boxers and out punch punchers. He could do it inside or outside, going forward or backward.

The only other boxer who finished in the top 10 that can outbox boxers and outpunch punchers and can compare in all around ability is 10th place finisher Ray Leonard but he lacked Robbie’s longevity, his two handed power and was not quite as indestructible as was Robinson.
