Many people including promoters, fighters, manager and fans are suspecting or doubting the "realness" of Jake Pauls past and future fights.
This is coming from people who know the business better than anyone else and they are open about fixed and scripted fights.
Is it really that far fetched that they might approached Ngannou and they offered him a deal in which he needs to make some promises like he needs to carry him a certain amount of rounds?
I think we have two options either they made an offer and like i said he had to promise things he didn't want to or he was just simply suprised that this kid wants to really fight him and he thought there must be something fishy going on.
The majority of the boxing community still things what is just happening there must be a catch to AJ vs JP that can't be serious because if so the fight is over in 60 seconds. And yes Ngannou lost against AJ but Ngannou would easily finish JP in the first 2-3 rounds.
So he might just be shocked and was like noway is that real there is something shady, either that or he got a contract with something in it that he doesn't want to do.
