What happened there was an outrage and it's worth reminding everyone frequently what happened, lest it just gets swept away like so many other similar scandals.

Beterbiev fulfilled his WBC mandatory to Callum Smith before his unification with Bivol later that year in the most important fight for the division. At that point (January 2024) Canelo had not fought a WBC mandatory for nearly three years (against Yildirim). Benavidez gained the 'interim' super-middleweight title in May 2022.

Instead of call their mandatory and risk having Canelo vacate, Benavidez was effectively offered an inducement to move up to 175lbs with the promise of another 'interim' belt and mandatory shot at the winner of Beterbiev - Bivol 2.

Within weeks of Bivol winning, the mandatory was called despite it being out of rotation and the WBC knowing Bivol was committed to a trilogy. This was in stark contrast to how Canelo was treated, but who cares when it's some less commercial guy from Kyrgyzstan, right?

There is no undisputed boxing order or next up in the rotation. Sulaiman made that clear in a recent article stating the WBC does not recognize any such thing. It's a myth. Present it if anyone has the facts. I will tell you this though, in May of 2023 and May of 2024 Canelo fought John Ryder WBO Interim and Jamie Mungia WBO #1 contender at the time with Charlo in between. So how's that for order/next up!!
