Comments Thread For: The Beltline: Ryan Garcia offers his opinion and we finally get to tell him he?s wrong

Elliot Worsell asks: Is Ryan Garcia, a fighter whose best win was annulled due to a failed drug test, the right person to evaluate whether Gennadiy Golovkin should be in the Hall of Fame?

Golovkin had everyone running to the hills for years

He deserves to be in the hall of fame more so than canelo as he bet him twice out of his prime

Golovkin is a Hall of Famer. Period. He is certainly NOT an all time great. He is probably not even a legitimate top 20 of all time MW. But the boxing HOF is a fairly low bar to clear as opposed to every other Hall, and Golovkin's resume is a good one. He was a polished, hard working, active champion. He took on all comers in his era. Yes, it was a weak era for his division. But if that is not held against Larry Holmes or the Klitschko brothers (and I would argue that applies to Tyson early in his career when he was most dominate) for their HOF credentials than all you can argue is did he perform dominate against that weaker era. And he was SO completely dominate it was a near comedy. The man was made of chiseled stone, never even really wobbled or truly hurt. His record against Canelo was so incredibly close (excepting that cash grab third fight) that I do not see them hurting his chances at all.

Beside- if Garcia is against it, I am likely for it out of a pure moral stance.

u get that a lot with ggg over the years, whos he beat whos he beat

its really a classic case of the influence those inept boxing judges have over the sport, u would have to be doing some sort of weird mental gymnastics to give canelo 6 rounds in their first fight

Ryan Garcia's opinion is not relevant.

I think losing to Romero is a far greater sin than PEDs use.

Hard to take seriously a fighter who quit in the ring.
There is some similarity to Adrien Broner..

So being a ped cheat bars you from having an opinion? That's one thing. I don't think it does.
Should we pay any attention to Garcia's opinion about Golovkin? That's another thing. I don't read anything Garcia says unless he has a fight coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Is Golovkin a HOF boxe?. That's another issue. He was an exciting fighter (who doesn't love an aggressive KO artist) but he struggled a little against Jacobs, Derevyanchenko and in Canelo 2. I take into account that he was badly promoted in Germany and avoided when those were his prime years age 27-31 - and Canelo aged him out. Plus also he was a huge star for 3-4 years - top 5 star at the time. So yeah, he should be in.

23 or whatever “ title “ defenses against fighters that Antwan Echols would have been favored against isn’t hall of fame worthy for some of the people.

it seems some people don't understand how hall of fame works. there isn't something like "he deserves to be in". every year they pick 3 names on the ballot. if all on the ballot are "trash" and don't deserve to be in, there are still 3 names inducted. one doesn't have to be something special. it's only important to be in front of others on the ballot. can you pick 3 names better than golovkin? arce, gamez, chitalada, eubank, benn, collins are good names. the rest are definitely, NO WAY, better than golovkin. so whenever someone says boxer x doesn't deserve to be in the hof, just pick another 3 names on the ballot (and look how people discredit them).

guys like ryan garcia probably have never seen the ballot. that's why his opinion is irrelevant.
