Comments Thread For: Daily Bread Mailbag: Reflecting on Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford, and Crawford's standing

In this week?s mailbag, Stephen ?Breadman? Edwards answers the inevitable questions about Saul "Canelo" Alvarez-Terence Crawford, where Crawford stands in history, who of the modern era's younger fighters can rival him there, and also how he compares to Oleksandr Usyk and Naoya Inoue

Where are all the Canelo fans who for the past few months were saying Bread was racist for picking Crawford, only picked him because he’s black, doesn’t know shttt about boxing, there are weight classes for a reason, this is an easy fight for Canelo? You guys are awfully quiet. Must be tough accepting the inferiority of a man you idolized and watch the hit his legacy took by losing to a smaller and older fighter. Of course you always get one bozo in the mailbag who tries to pretend that Canelo somehow deserved the nod. They’re a delusional and prideless fanbase with no integrity.

This goat stuff and top 10 ever is a stretch in my humble opinion. Canelo certainly did not seem anywhere as fast, active, or sharp as he did in his prime. Question marks surround Spence and his accident. Other than those two guys, he has not fought a bunch of A listers. He fights very infrequently. He certainly has incredible skills and is absolutely well rounded, but it would be difficult for me to consider him in the top 10 of all time with the lack of level of competition he has faced.
If he fought the dudes Bread wants him to fight and wins, I could change my opinion.

Canelo has never been able to deal with a real elite boxer, he has tried and fail multiple times, when he was 21, 23 and 32 years old and always looked the same slow plodder.

Lets be fair and agree that on this occasion breadman made the right call. I picked Canelo and got it wrong. But talking about the possibilty of putting Crawford in the same room as Ali is just foolish. How many fighters on crawfords resume are going to be talked about in 10 years from now as "great" fighters....and how many of his fights are going to be remembered?. Its the same thing with Andre Ward. How many of his great fights do we remember clearly and fondly? Ali fought a who's who of great historic fighters who will be remembered for all time through boxing history because the fighters he fought also fought each other to determine who was the best of their era. These days "champions" fight in two different leagues...virtually like olympic track qualifiers...but never seem to meet in a finals race.

Beating Canelo was very good for his legacy. But, without sounding like I’m hating on him, Crawford simply doesn’t have the resume to rank very highly among the all-time greats.
