It’s hard to recall a recent fight in the sport of boxing that has been as anticipated or littered with pre-fight coverage the way the November 14th Miguel Cotto-Manny Pacquiao showdown has been. Everyday there seems to be a new storyline emerging from both sides of the camp and there has been discussion amongst fans that neither camp has gone as smoothly as expected.
As everyone knows Pacquiao has tucked himself away in Baguiao City in the Philippines and the results have seemed to be mixed. While Pacquiao’s sparring has reportedly gone well there have been other distractions that have had many scratching their head as to what is really going on behind the scenes.
Recently in the news on the Cotto side of the equation was the early dismissal of Francisco ‘El Gato’ Figueroa from the Puerto Rican’s camp. In follow up reports, Figueroa was said to be puzzled as to why he was let go and again many began questioning just how ready Miguel is for a fight of this magnitude.
One man who has gotten to know Miguel Cotto very well this year is Tampa trainer Pete Fernandez, best known for his work with then Lightweight contender Edner ‘Cherry Bomb’ Cherry. For his camps for his fights with Joshua Clottey and now Pacquiao, Cotto had settled into the Fight Factory Gym and from seeing Miguel on a daily basis, Fernandez is overly impressed.
“He looks really good,” Fernandez recently explained. “He’s very focused and he looks ready to go. I’m impressed with his work ethic and his strength and conditioning coach Phil [Landman] has done a magnificent job on him.”
This summer Cotto engaged in a wild give and take affair against Ghana’s Clottey at Madison Square Garden. Despite looking far from sensational, Cotto showed tremendous will and stamina, as it was obvious that he was in terrific shape. Fernandez was with Miguel during those days in camp prior to the Clottey bout and speaks of the friendship that the two men formed.
“I’m come to know him very well through the two camps that he has been here,” Fernandez says with respect. “He and I have developed a great relationship. He respects me and we talk a lot. Not just about boxing, but also about a life in general. He’s just a genuine guy.”
When asked for his thoughts on the bout, Fernandez is quick to point to Cotto’s strength and body punching before anything else. While many are picking Pacquiao’s speed and relentless whirlwind attack to carry the day, Fernandez believes that the Filipino fighter should be wary.
“I like Cotto to stop him in nine. I just don’t think people understand the type of power that he brings. I feel that he just has a great all around attack and I think his left hook is going to be the key punch in this fight.”
