Carl Froch is hoping Mikkel Kessler will beat Andre Ward next month to set up a unification fight with the Dane in the new year.
Froch made a low-key start to the Super Six Boxing Classic when he overcame a negative Andre Dirrell in Nottingham on Saturday night, earning victory by a split decision.
Kessler will defend his WBA super-middleweight title against Ward when he opens his Super Six campaign in the United States, before taking on WBC champion Froch in round two of the new tournament.
The Englishman is still looking for the recognition he feels he deserves - and victory over former Joe Calzaghe victim Kessler will provide just that.
"I think when we beat Kessler we'll get the accolades," he said. "He's next and that's one to look forward to.
"Kessler boxes a bit and is a good mover but he'll stand there and fight rather than hold and moan. I'll do what I have to do, if I'm struggling to box early on then I'll put it on him and stand and have a trade-off but we'll see.
"I do think Kessler will win a close decision, travelling to America to face Ward. I'd like him to win and when we meet it will be for the undisputed title, which is what I've craved since turning professional."
Froch returned to his home town of Nottingham to make the second defence of the title against Dirrell, but promoter Mick Hennessy admits he may have to travel to fight Kessler.
"We'll begin talks now but we have an agreement with Sauerland Events (Kessler's promoters) that wherever it makes commercial sense and wherever we're going to get the biggest gate - whether it's Copenhagen or Nottingham - is where it will be," he said.
