I actually like Ward on a personal level, intelligent guy. But him not fighting outside the US (beside two fights in the Caribbean) is a major knock on him and US fighters generally. We witnessed a US referee trying to help Berlanga last night by delaying the restart of the fight and this kind of stuff happens too often.
Ward gave it away when he said we thought ggg was free to fight yet he didn't offer to fivht him until 2 fights down the road as confirmed by roc nation. If you thought he was free why not offer to fight him now? Oh because he might accept that since hes free. He won't accept a fight that will conflict with canelo. Ward knew that. Very strategic.
And yes ward having all hometown fights wouldnt have been an issue but we saw the fights and it was pure shenanigans in many of them. Essentially it was his back up plan if things didnt go to plan.
Any time he was challenged he resorted to wrestle mania mode where anything goes and the rules went out the window. Whenever he wasn't challenged he boxed like any other boxer would. No need to cheat so he didnt.
I just remembered against Sullivan Barrera he knocked him down with a low blow and I think he was expecting the ref to start counting it as a knock down but the ref actually took a point. surprising yes but ward was easily winning the fight so tbe ref could say "hey I'm impartial, I'm a good ref" reality is when refs had the chance to punish ward in fights that hung in the balance they failed every time. Not a coincidence.
He easily could have been dq'd in several fights and the dynamic of many of his fights would have severely changed if he had been warned and punished for clear cheating. No one goes back and watches a ward fight. They simply don't hold up.Last edited by daggum; 07-13-2025, 03:09 PM.GhostofDempsey likes this.

Then he robbed Kovalev blind and retired. The entitlement. Its like the boxing establishment thought if we keep propping him up we will eventually get something in return..they didn't.
Only 1 contract has ever been offered for a ward vs ggg fight and it was offered by team ward. According to Abel Sanchez, the offer came to late because they already signed to fight david lemieux. These are team ggg words, not mines
Got off the canvas in round 2 of the first fight to go on and end kovalev career as a p4p fighter over the next 17 rounds

He didn't refuse, he negotiated and everyone else agreed because he wasn't deemed a threat. If they had said "nah, you're not big enough to make such a request" I don't think he would have pulled out

I wouldn’t put him on the level of rjj or joe calzhage, but he is HoF, no doubt. He lost the 1st Kovalev fight clearly, but rematched him and won the 2nd. To me he is probably the level of beterbiev if he was to retire right now with a single loss to bivol.

He was a dirty, boring fighter. There are highlight videos of all his dirtiest tactics. Just look at Kessler’s face after all the elbows. Should have been DQ’d for the low blows on Kovalev and several others.Gaseous Clay likes this.
