Maybe he’ll be the son of a good fighter who surpasses his father

we’ve seen the children of contenders go further than their dads

Mayweather vs Guerrero was for the vacant Ring world championship, which means they were the top two rated contenders in the division at the time of the fight.

At the time Guerrero was a 1 loss fighter, and that loss was a split decision against a future world titlist that he avenged by KO two fights later. He was coming off a win over Andre Berto going into the Mayweather fight.

Guerrero vs world title winning opposition:

L vs Keith Thurman UD 12
L vs Danny Garcia UD 12
L vs Omar Figueroa Jr. TKO 3
W vs Victor Ortiz UD 10
W vs Andre Berto UD 10

            Major world titles won:
            IBF 126 X2
            IBF 130

            Interim belts won:
            WBA and WBO 135
            WBC 147

What else do you want from the guy? He's certainly no Hall of Famer but he won 3 major belts, 3 interim belts, fought in four divisions (skipped 140 entirely), never ducked a challenge.

This is the first step up fight for any of the next generation of Guerreros.

Jessie Guerrero (Robert's nephew) is 5-0-3 but none of his wins came against winning opposition.
Victor Guerrero (Robert's nephew) is 8-0-0 but only one of his wins came against winning opposition.
Robert Guerrero Jr (Robert's son) is 6-0-0 but only one of his wins came against winning opposition. Today's opponent is 6-1-0 so it's a big step up.

Robert Jr is the youngest at 18. Victor is 25 and Jessie is 21 so it's past time for them to step up.

He beat Gamaliel Diaz six years before Diaz won the WBC featherweight title.
He stopped Erik Aiken when he was the reigning IBF featherweight champion.
He beat Malcolm Klassen when he was in the middle of his second IBF super featherweight title reign.
He beat Andre Berto immediately after Andre Berto knocked out the reigning IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck
Ortiz and Berto the second time around were old, but so was Guerrero.

Again, the guy won 3 world titles and 3 interim world titles and fought 14 times against world title winning opposition. That's more than 99.999% of boxers will ever accomplish.

Not a Hall of Famer, but he was a respectable world titlist in his own era. Why wouldn't his son celebrate that legacy?
