  • Comments Thread For: Devin Haney-Ryan Garcia and the boxing butterfly effect

Devin Haney seemed on the way towards super stardom, but his bizarre fight with Ryan Garcia has created a long list of issues that the technically unbeaten fighter has to overcome.

Good insight into the complexity of this rivalry. I had thought Haney was overrated and opportunistic, as he had little power, was a weight bully and seemed fragile emotionally. His fights against Kambosos were not championship level fights, yet he became undisputed as Loma was in Ukraine defending his country. Then when Haney beat Loma in a dead-even fight that was championship level, I was almost won over, but then Bill Haney lost his mind and went beyond fight-dad craziness and was setting up Devin for an embarrassment. It didn't happen against Prograis, who Devin dominated. I expected him to outpoint Ryan Garcia, and it looked that way through 6 rounds. But that first period left hook that rocked Devin was on everyone's mind, Devin's too. From Round 7 on it was a complete dismantling; Devin can claim weight and steroids, but that was a pretty comprehensive beating and he hasn't appeared on a Top 10 P4P list again, not even as an Honorable Mention. He knows he was exposed, and I don't think he'll be the same. As for Garcia, it's hard to know what he's about and how this all affects him - he is universally disliked in the boxing world after disrespecting the wives of Kambosos and Caleb Plant. But man, that guy has talent. I hope he knocks Rolly into oblivion on the Times Square card. Ramirez will give Haney a good battle, and could beat him; Teofimo comes off as way too full of himself and Barboza is a handful. That's one weird fight card and there may be some surprises in Times Square. Maybe there will be a spring hurricane.

      Nobody says the obvious.

Their families & friends & promoters need to tell them to stay off of social media.

      This is totally self-inflicted.

You don't see Usyk, Loma, GGG, & other foreign guys crashing out on Twitter or Instagram.

This is totally an American phenomenon.

I like your insights! I agree as well... Garcia is talented, he really has to hold it together. He has world class weapons. Haney is game but does not really have the same talent... That game changing power is huge... Tank has it also.
