When you talk about a different age, in 1941 Joe Louis managed to squeeze in just 7 title defences! Needless to say, he wasn't with any of today's promoters! 7 is just a ridiculous number.

You could really see his reign anyway you want.
You can see a guy who was put down on the canvas quite a bit, & often by lesser competition.
Or you can see a guy who always got up off the canvas & soundly beat everybody who came close to beating him in every rematch.
