He knew Ortiz was not going to step down to the level of fighting a prospect, he was just using Ortiz's name to seem more credible. At this point in his career Zayas qualifies to be a sparring partner for the top guys. He has proven literally nothing and as he has progressed to better tomato cans his power seems suspect and he looks more and more mediocre. They are badly trying to push him as the next great fighter, but honestly, he doesn't seem all that special.
He may go into another gear against really good comp. As others have said, they just need to stop with the baby steps and let him sink or swim. It may take a really good fighter to get Zayas to show his best. I honestly don't see him as world class, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

Soooo team Ortiz reached out to him with an offer, told him he had 24 hours to accept, he accepted in minutes, then team Ortiz changed their mind yet Zayas was using Ortiz name for clout? Make that make sense. As far as Ortiz stepping down in comp to face a prospect, I must have missed when Ortiz became some multi time world champ with a stellar resume. Last I checked he was a 0 time world champ who backed out of a fight with the best name he was scheduled to face multiple times because he couldn’t make weight anymore. If you see otherwise, I’m willing to be proven wrong.
