    An afternoon down at Kronk

I entered the rec center and made my way down the stairs. At the bottom the familiar kronk gold and red lined the walls as I entered the gym. There as usual were the trainers, Mr. Logan, Walter and terrance Fikes. One new trainer, atleast new to me, was working the mitts with a young fighter, it was Theotrice Chambers. He was a promising young pro who turned pro at the age of 17.

Then there is always Bam, loud spoken as usual, I go over and shake his hand. Bam has a way of bringing life to a gym with his words. While I chat with Bam a man stepped up offering his hand. He said that his name was, well I believe it to be a ****** name but I may be mistaken. I introduce myself and he walks away after a couple of words. Bam leans over, that Joe Manley, he says. Joe Louis Manley I reply. Bam shakes his head. I walk over to Joe and we get talking. I tell him that I have a boxing card of him from back in the day and he says; "Thats funny, I never even knew that I had a card and I never got nothing for letting them make a card." He smiles and we continue talking.

Over behind a rub down table I see a young fighter doing his stomach exercises on a matt. Its the young kronk prospect Octavio Lara. I go over and we chat abit. He tells me of a fight coming up soon.

Then who walks through the door, its "Trouble Man" Marlon Thomas. After he dresses we touch fists and begin talking about back in the day when we would spar. I was 14 and he was 12 at the time. I say to him, man that right hand used to come fast, im sure it still does. He smiles, man you had the right hand, Im tellin ya. I smile with the compliment.

The pros continue to work as the afternoon runs on. Then the amatuers begin coming through the door. First to the gym being Thomas McKay, a promising young amatuer with anice boxing style but an even more impressive personality. We talk for a while as a young man that I didnt recognize approaches and begins talking with Thomas. Its Domonique Dalton, the reigning junior world champion. He recognizes me as a referee for some of his fights and we get talking about how he was so little the first time that I saw him at a amatuer kronk show in Detroit.

Joe and I are going to meet up tomorrow for an interview. This is one nice guy Joe Manley. Octavio was also interested in talking as was Marlon Thomas, who is in line to do battle with the W.B.O title holder. I also asked if I could get a couple of words with Domonique and it was approved. Kronk is still happening, from the gound level to the top. Report to be posted soon.....Rockin'

I would love to write as a profession. If its about boxing I would be there man. Its something that I enjoy doing and it is something that I believe I have some talent with. When I left boxing, before I started being a ref and judge, I needed to be around the game still but did not want to get punched in the nose anymore. So I started interviewing the people that I grew up with. I have written articles about some of the guys and recently about our commisioner in michigan as well as armando garcia, a high profile referee. They both really liked the stories that I wrote. Brad was going to look into getting a mag to let me cover the michigan boxing area and my former trainer is going to talk to the commisioner in his state to see if theres anything that I could do there. I knew that I was on to something when I interviewed Marlon Thomas a few years ago and wrote up an article on a place called BoxTalk(I believe the site is gone now) I printed it up and took it for him to read. He left and the next day returned, touched me on my shoulder and said, "It was beautiful, thankyou." that felt great. Writing is something that I have found after boxing, something to fill that void and bring back some adrenaline. I am very happy that you like it and I one day hope to get the scoop, the whole scoop and nothing but the scoop.... so help me god............Rockin'

Nice story. I wish I had a similar experience when I went to Gleason's. Man, I'm never impressed by fame or celebrities, but when I saw "Big Truck" Braithwaite, Ben Tackie (I know, but still) and a few other pros just working out with regular people I was both awe-struck and impressed. I just stared at them like a doofus and didn't say a word.

They said Zab and Vivian Harris were in town also, but I didn't get to see those guys.

dont be awe struck by them, go up and talk to them when they are not working. Just about every fighter that I have met has been very open and kind. Ofcourse I have not met them all but just about every fighter that I have met has been a nice perwon to be around. Like I said there will always be exceptions. But give it a try, you will probably find them to be very cool with you, unlike atheletes of other sports, that think that they are just to damned good to talk to anybody........ Rockin'
