Yes for some of them but they're a minority in MMA. Most of them come from Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu or Judo backgrounds and wanted to make money with their art, cause you can't make money in those sports.
Fedor (MMA's best heavyweight) is 7 time Sambo World Champion, Demian Maia is several times World Jiu jitsu champ, and Matt Lindland was a silver medalist(wrestling) in the olympics.

MMA is below boxing but requires skills, it's not an easy sport. NFL players who train MMA said it was tougher than football.
You have to be a good wrestler, a good jiujitsuka and a good Muay Thai boxer to be an elite MMA fighter.
