Algieri says that Norman bet on himself and I would say the opposite is true. He refused to bet on himself because he believed he could not win that fight. He has chosen to make that money by winning the next 5 fights and staying an undefeated champion by fighting mediocre opposition. Can you imagine any of the all time greats (when they were young up and coming prospects) reject an opportunity like this? Great fighters are always full of confidence and self belief and would jump at an opportunity to fight another champion for a career high purse. Obviously Norman is not one of them. Asking for retirement money at this stage means only one thing - you do not believe there will be another career high payday after the fight with Boots.

Don't know what pipe Algieri has been hitting but you aren't "betting on yourself" by avoiding a fight that not only is your highest payday but could make you a unified titlist and solidify your status as a champion.

To fight on an undercard for peanuts the reality is betting on yourself would be taking the chance, beating his ass and moving on to bigger and better things (and the paydays that follow).

Norman is not a full-pledged TR/ESPN fighter. He's got his own management team bargaining hard on a fight by fight basis. He has yet to prove himself before becoming the next Teofimo Lopez, Bud Crawford, or Shakur of TR/ESPN. Meaning it's still a long road ahead for him to reach the $1 mil paycheck.

The welterweight division is so nondescript right now that getting a payday of that magnitude won't come again any time soon. This is one of the major problems with boxing right now. Guys having belts that aren't truly championship caliber. If Norman was a real champion, he would jump at a payday like that, as well as the chance to separate himself from the pack. But he's more interested in paddling his record against B level opponents and calling himself a "champion".

He is 23 years old he is still developing, still has plenty of time, this bussiness of " take the money and run " being put out there by Chrissy means very little. Norman " trusts " himself enough to build on his record and ring experience and prove himself to himself, that is not fear nor is it ******ity or bad judgement. Lots more can go wrong inside the ropes besides a loss. How many fighters has Chrissy developed ? Keep talking Chrissy and maybe you will be looking for another pay day somewhere. Chrissy never made any mistakes taking fights that ruined him did he, he was fearless and hungry............and never doubted himself....
