  • Comments Thread For: 'Japanese Assassin' TJ Doheny refusing to listen to the noise surrounding Naoya Inoue

Don't tell TJ Doheny he's the underdog against Naoya Inoue. He's not interested. Don't tell the Australia-based Irishman he doesn't deserve the shot. He doesn't care. Don't tell him he won't win against the Japanese star. He doesn't believe it

Doheny isn't an exciting opponent or anything, but reading this article made me think that he definitely put in the most effort to make it possible to occur compared to the rest of the candidates so I guess he's getting rewarded for that.

He agreed to fight in Japan as a higher ranked guy against lesser money opponents multiple times leading up to getting on good terms with Ohashi. He accepted being the reserve and fighting a preliminary fight that didn't even get streamed (the card started streaming on the first world title fight Akui vs Kuwahara). He made sure he was available on Inoue's schedule. Doheny certainly worked everything in and out of the ring to try to make the stars align to his favor, and didn't let go of the money bag when it floated by close enough to him.

First of all, out of anyone that is complaining that Doheny doesn't deserve an Inoue match aka payday Goodman is absolutely the last guy that should complain that because Doheny said it absolutely correctly, "The only reason I’m in this position is because he (Goodman) shat himself. Please put that down in black and white." Doheny didn't jump in front of Goodman demanding he was more worthy in September and a better opponent and Inoue decided to duck Goodman for Doheny, Goodman decided he would rather go on and fight in July in Australia instead of wait six extra weeks to fight Inoue in September which led to the stars luckily aligning to Doheny's favor. The whole "I had a fight scheduled in mid-July already"-excuse doesn't really mean much because it was a very well known fact by early spring that Inoue was fighting Nery in May, so being the mandatory why would you schedule a fight on mid-late July to begin with, instead of waiting until after the fight to schedule a stay busy fight against a no name.

As for MJ...the whole Goodman fiasco aside, why didn't HE show up to Tokyo ringside? Doheny isn't a better opponent than MJ in any way, but atleast he has forced his name to be thrown around enough. What is/was MJ waiting for? For Turki to pay the money to get Inoue to fight in Saudi or UK or whatever?

How big step-aside did duck Inoue pay MJ for this garbage to happen instead?

I am really puzzled that Inoue took this fight. He always seems to like a challenge and picks high quality opponents for his shows. This seems like a soft touch. Was this just the best available opponent for a stay busy fight because nobody else with a name was willing to step up or not available before the end of the year? He does like to fight twice a year so this seems to be on schedule for that but it just seems like a bit of a let down after a string of really good, exciting fights he delivered.

well he fights 4x a year. that why he gets to have a soft touch every so often. these other guys fight 1x every 16 months and always fight soft touches as "comeback" fights. plus these moron greedy promoters get their fighters into these fights in-house to make all the
