Mexico has obviously been in dire need of a new boxing icon.
Despite his skill and stature, Juan Manuel Marquez has just never cut in the icon department for Mexicanos. Not like the revered ones Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales and Juan Ma’s popularity is miniscule compared to El Gran Campeon, Julio Cesar Chavez.
Btw, that’s Julio Sr., not Julio Jr. who is making a nifty living out of beating up on pasty faced white boys with limited ring talent.
His didn’t win a round effort in his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t help Marquez’s approval ratings among his countrymen either.
But, chillax, because Golden Boy’s Boxing Banker Richie Rich Schaefer says it is American Mayweather who can be the country’s new favorite fighter.
I knew that Mayweather Loves Mexico because he had teeshirts made up that said so but I never knew how much Mexico Loves Mayweather.
Speaking to Boxingscene, Schaefer laughingly suggests that, if Mayweather were to go South of the Border down Mexico way to fight unbeaten prospect Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, they could sell—get this, humor lovers—100,000 at Mexico City’s mammoth Azteca Stadium.
I was in that cavernous facility when my then boss Don King staged a massive bout between Chavez and Greg Haugen. There were a record 136,000 in the house with about 132,000 on paid tickets.
Richie Rich, who is probably playing to Floyd’s ego and is not totally delusional, said Alvarez would peddle 10,000 ducats with Mayweather provoking fans to buy up the next 90,000.
Alvarez is a 19 year old with a 29-0, 22 KOs record.
"Mayweather is a big event fighter," Schaefer said.
Last time I checked, Mayweather did not move 13,000 tickets at the MGM Grand Sept. 19 on Mexican Independence Day weekend when he was torturing Mexico’s most well known active fighter.
Thanks for the chuckles, RR.
Mayweather puts 90,000 butts in those Azteca Stadium seats.
That’s rich, Richie Rich, that’s rich.
