He's been a prolific fighter, and that type of boxer is disappearing, replaced with annual fights or less from other boxers. And at this point he's kind one of the last of the old guard.
Who's the future?
Inoue? Great but small, and little guys just don't impress fans the same way as bigger fighters.
Crawford? He hasnt been busy anyway and is on the way out. So are many others, most of whom don't have as many fights as Canelo.
Ennis? All talk and no, or very little, action. So are lots of younger guys these days.
Canelo is now running on the strength of who he fought before, and that he outlasted many. I'm not a big Canelo fan, but I respect what he's done and think he's now probably the symbol of a dying breed of fighter, like JCC or somebody similar.
