Is Calzhage One of The Best Ever?

It’s a difficult one really.
What will always go against Calzaghe is the fact he seemingly wouldn’t fight outside Britain, which alienated him from one of the biggest markets in boxing (i.e. America). Also what sticks in my throat is the three pull outs from fighting Glenn Johnson (who I think he would have beaten anyway), which also doesn’t help with the American audience. I also don’t believe his stay at home attitude was all his fault, Frank Warren is renowned for protecting his cash cows.
As for beating Hopkins (which he did) and Jones I don’t think they can be counted given their relative ages. What is interesting from reading Calzaghe’s book he has a wrist injury which he incurred during his amateur days which caused major problems during his pro career, taking that into account Calzaghe did not do the sparring that other fighters would do, therefore his ability to adapt in fights adds major weight to his status as one of the best in the division.
I think a lot of people may suggest the likes of Roy Jones, but I don’t think you can really include him, he only had 6 fights really at supermiddleweight and the same issue of fighting away from home can also be levelled at him. Can you imagine a prime Jones against a prime Calazaghe...wow now that’s a fight! Such a shame that the sport doesn’t see the best fight the best often (if at all). In addition Calzaghe made a number of pointless WBO title defences against inferior opposition; again the same can be levelled at Jones.
From this side of the pond, I was lucky to grow up during the Eubank, Benn and Collins years they have to be up there although prime against prime I think Jones and Calzaghe could beat them.
Another fighter who finished undefeated was Sven Ottke who I would discount purely due to the number of questionable decisions he got in Germany.
Going back further, Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler (ok they were more middleweights however given the actual age of the supermiddleweight division) if they were fighting now they could mix it. Going back further what about Sugar Ray Robinson?
For this rather than saying “is Calzaghe the best” more who are the contenders? Calzaghe certainly is one of them.Comment
