LOL - that's very cool.



I remember Brewer had a good run for a while. Tall, rangy, never in a bad fight, became a must-see fighter for me. So timing is everything. Just when both my grown kids live in Philly, the Blue Horizon closes. I'd be up to Philly every month if they still had the fights there.

I wonder why no one has thought to reopen the place. With that legendary name and its place in history , more than half of the marketing battle is already done.

Just a few guesses:
The building is ancient, so there have to be costly maintenance and repair issues.
I don't think the place was ever air-conditioned. I know that was part of the "charm", but come on, it's gonna 97 here in the DMV again. Ugh.
Small seating capacity severely limits live gate revenue.
Accessibility issues for mobility-impaired people.
In other words, a gaping money pit.
I think it should re-open, too, as someone ELSE'S money pit

Here's an idea to re-energize the local fight club scene:

Philly has an amazing building stock as an old city, with multiple colleges and universities right downtown, lots of big old churches and auditorium-like spaces that could fit the niche below arenas like Wells Fargo and Temple's Liacouras Center. Small-capacity venues generate electric atmospheres simply by being small and selling out fast. Maybe a savvy developer who is a boxing fan can find the right property and adapt it to be "The New Blue". Line up some promotional deals and get media buy-in to promote regular live shows using the Philly rep as a fight town.
