  • Comments Thread For: On This Day: Jack Johnson stops Jim Jeffries in 'Fight of the Century'

Staged on July 4, 1910, in Reno, Nevada, Jack Johnson's racially charged defense of his heavyweight title against Jim Jeffries was every bit as sprawling as its scheduled 45 rounds and the moniker of "Fight of the Century."

I saw the Ken Burns documentary on this fight. Highly recommended to any boxing fan if they haven't seen it. I've seen a lot of the footage and to me this is the first big fight of the modern era of boxing. I remember watching the old footage and getting excited like it was a PPV. The fight is a reminder of the best and worst of this sport we love.

We know Jack was one of the greatest in the sport; Johnson dominated ol' Jim but let's not forget that Jefferies was a heck of a fighter in his prime....agile, heavy handed and endurance.

114 ago and today a well known Mexican American fighter is suspended for a rant in which he openly attacked black people, islamics, and my fellow Israelites while claiming to want to join the Klan. Race and boxing are so heavily intertwined that anyone who says anything otherwise is selling something. The demographics of who’s pushing the racism in boxing has changed, but the targeted groups remain the same

I’ve been a fan of Jack Johnson ever since I watched The Great White Hope as a kid. Ken Burns’s documentary on Jack is fantastic: the narration by Keith David, the vintage footage, the Wynton Marsalis soundtrack — everything is great. If people think they’ve experienced trouble, racism, etc., they have no clue what Johnson went through…and what a superman he was in the face of it all. Truly an amazing and inspirational story.

The Great White Hopes is a brilliant book about this period of time when Johnson was champion.

Unforgivable Blackness by Ken Burns is one of his best documentaries. Recommend it for everyone.

Sad but true. Just yesterday, in Melbourne, Australia, mobs of violent P~a~l~e~s~t~i~n~i~a~n~s attacked a restaurant and house of worship.

Please tell me who the culprit is.
I am honestly unaware of this.
