  • Comments Thread For: Daniel Jacobs Hopes Renewed Spirit, Ring Return Will Carry Him to Canastota

By the time Daniel Jacobs steps into the ring July 6, it will have been almost two and a half years since he last stepped on the canvas for a professional fight - long enough to determine exactly what he's fighting for.

Jacobs has always been so/so and obnoxious just to even look at.He needs to either not come back or fight Rosado at any weight..then win..like really win, lose, or draw retire and never come back

I have worked with DJ and he’s an extremely nice guy and super personable. From a fan perspective it took me awhile to understand the hype but after speaking to a lot of boxers he was very much rated highly as an amateur fighting virtually everyone and beating them. I state all of this to say, as a gentlemen he’s the type of boxer you would want to represent boxing and the hall of fame but if he thinks from what he’s done so far he’s HOF level he’s drinking the same stuff as Deontay Wilder in his second fight with Fury aka “the Breland Bottle”. DJ really has done nothing of note and if he’s gets in the HOF there are so many more that then would have to question why haven’t I got the call. Great guy though seriously one of the nicest dudes just not HOF level boxer to me.

Even though I had him winning the John Ryder fight, I still thought Jacobs looked a shell of his former self and I'm not keen to see him taking more punishment.

That run he went on in between the Pirog and Golovkin losses was something special. 12 straight knockouts including Sergio Mora twice, Peter Quillin, and Caleb Truax.

I don't think he's a HOF guy either but it's not crazy for a guy who has accomplished what he's accomplished to hold that in front of himself as a carrot. He has 6 wins over former/future world titlists (okay, one of them was JCC Jr lol), he went the distance with GGG and Canelo in their primes, he held the IBF world title (I don't recognize WBA "regular" reigns). He didn't get to that spot by not believing in himself.

Like I said, I have him as just a very good guy in his own era and not a HOF fighter. But in his mind he can come back and win another world title, and if he were to pull a win over Canelo or something out of his butt you'd have to reconsider. I'd personally prefer to see him hang the gloves up now after a respectable performance against Ryder (I had him winning), but fighters never know when to stop.

British and Mexican tv commentators felt he beat Golovkin.

he can fight again now if it really happens but i mean not much good is going to come out of it as far as a kick start of his fighting carreer that is over age alone has taken that away from him along with the performances of the past, how long off from the fights ? how old it he now gotta be an older 37 and that sounds like a break in age. Shame Mosely Jr. ? Ok that is going to look like what inside the ropes ? If the past in any indicator not very interesting to say the least. This fight is going to take him to where again ? HOF ? Oh yea that is not happening.

Jacobs deserves limitless credit for his courage in coming back to the sport after cancer. Unfortunately I think he’s another fighter who’s been hurt by thinking he’s smarter than he actually is: coming in overweight for the GGG and Canelo fights - and forfeiting any chances to win their belts - was unprofessional and the extra weight probably hurt him more than helped in either fight. And Jacobs’ ego appeared to blow up after getting the big Canelo payday - which led to the bad optics of publicly splitting up with his lifelong trainer over the trainer’s pay. I know they’re back to working together, but Jacobs lost a lot of momentum by making dumb decisions.

I like Daniel Jacobs as a person and a fighter. Had he kept his belt after 7 or 8 title defenses then a case can be made for him to be considered in the Hall of Fame. However, boxers do not make the hall of fame for courage but for their fights and wars. At best he was a solid B level fighter who has a very respectable name. At this point any fighter who gets a win over Jacobs will get some name recognition. HOF level, no way.

I can't think of many standout moments with Jacobs despite watching most of his fights when he was coming up and got big. My memories are him being pasted by Pirog. Then watching from my phone on the bed in a shanty rental in Puerto Rico when he fought GGG. All I recall mostly on the blurry image was him being dropped. I did think he was having a good performance overall though until that happened...

Otherwise, I can't recall any standout performances that blew me away or had me look it back up to rewatch. Isn't HOF sort of like that? A fighter whose fights you might want to rewatch at some point?
