Why did Lennox Lewis have a tendency to keep his hands down instead of keeping them up?

In some fights, I can hear Emmanuel Steward in the corner repeatedly telling him to keep his hands up, but it seemed like this was a normal occurrence. In the first Rahman fight, he was backing away with has hands down and ended up getting knocked out.
