Comments Thread For: Teddy Atlas: 'David Benavidez Was Too Much Of A Gentleman'

David Benavidez's light heavyweight debut was successful against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on Saturday night, but it also raised further questions about his performance, particularly in the second half of the fight when he appeared to tire.

I'm gonna ride with pink fishscale Paulie on this one, over Teddy McGin and Tonic

If anything , I would say the gentleman in that shared circle would have to Gvodzyk , who never seemed to put any mustard behind his shots

This wasn't exactly Ray Robinson against Joey Maxim, but it was a man who normally weighs in 7 pounds lighter, and yes those 7 pounds make a big difference. David is a very good puncher, but he was hitting a very fit, skilled, naturally bigger man, in his 1st fight at the weight. Gvozdyk isn't some bum. He put Superman Adonis Stevenson in a coma, and gave Beterviev a very good fight before eventually losing. He's not an old 37. All he ever lost to was Betebiev. And David picked him, out of all the guys he could have chosen. And David dominated him. So it really doesn't matter that David didn't knock him out. It's equally impressive that he shut him out and won almost just about every round. And he did it without relying on overwhelming a smaller guy, like some have alleged about his run at 168. He did it on skills and defense. So I give David massive credit for his performance. I feel like he could operate at 175 if he really chose to. It would just be a matter of properly preparing his body for the task. If Canelo wasn't blatantly ducking him for years, he would have had much less reason to move up in weight. It's kinda like how Kell Brook felt he had to jump higher to fight GGG. Amir "cuckold" Khan was ducking him for over a decade, and no one else was jumping to face Kell either. But David is better able to move up, with his frame, and skill set. David can be the man at 168 or 175, whatever he wants to do

Benavidez declared after the fight that he fought with a previously undisclosed hand injury, and that he didn't want the fight to be cancelled. Based on that, it would not surprise me if the parties had come to an agreement, so to speak. Gvozdyk just tapped Benavidez throughout the whole, even as the latter was badly fading.

Gvozdyk was half the man here I thought he would be
Had he been the same guy who put Adonis into a coma, then this fight was over for Benavidez. It's clear now why he is running back to SMW, he knows he will get killed by Beterbiev or Bivol

Good example was Canelo running back to SMW after Bivol put his boxing shoes in Canelo's ass.
