I'm glad Canelo is being held to the same standard as everyone else, but I agree with the sentiments above that the IBF's mandatories are generally ****. The fact we've had Hrgovic hanging over the Usyk - Fury situation tells its own story.

Until boxing gets away from this ridiculous obsession with belts this won't end. Sky Sports even seemed to be promoting the IBO title during their broadcast of Usyk - Fury, displaying five belts in the studio.

The problem is their rules are ******.

That they just rank anybody willing to sign up with them, and then just let random bums fight eliminators to become mandatory challengers is the problem here.

Guys like William Scull and Edgar Berlanga have absolutely no business being a mandatory challenger. Even if they fought each other, the winner still wouldn't be worthy of a shot. It should be guys like Benavidez, Morrell, Mbili, Gongorra, etc. Or the elite fighters in adjacent weight classes like Beterbiev, Bivol, or Janibek.

My friend just asked me what does this all mean and who’s William Scull, and how was Scull ranked so high, and who did he beat? Who in The Ring top 10 at 168 did William Scull beat to become Canelo’s mando.

Basically I told him the WBC, WBO, WBA and IBF all have their own rankings, and since they usually don’t rank the same fighters, they tend to have sh/ttier, lesser fighters than The Ring or TBRB.

So this leads to sh/t fights for defenses, paper champs created, a really good fighter beating a really bad fighter for a vacant belt, and the actual best fighters of the boxing not keeping the titles.

So yeah they’re following their rules, but their rules are a crock of sh/t and it ruins boxing more than anything. They don’t make boxing better.

Yes, yes he fcking is better. Way better. And yes he should be the mando for all 4 belts. All of them should rank Benavidez as the #1 contender. It’s such bullsh/t. Boxing is such an embarrassing sport to try to explain. It’s the worst sport to explain all the f/ckerry that goes on here.

I have no issue with this. The next fight should be Benavidez. Not the IBF mando.

The IBF is sticking to its rules. Can’t fault them for sticking to the letter of the rules.

The spirit of the rules should make their management see keeping the belt on Canelo (and Usyk as well) is better for the sport and the fans.

Their rankings f***ing suck though. If they actually had the top contenders ranked highly it would be so much better for boxing.

I like that the IBF enforce their rules regardless of the status of the champion but they have to improve those rankings in terms of credibility.

The Beterbiev-Bivol winner is going to get ordered to fight Eifert in the division above for example, far too many mediocre fighters are ranked highly by the IBF.

I bash Canelo a lot and he deserves it - but this is the right move and respect to him for it.

Canelo could say "He's my mandatory, cry to the IBF not to me" and give the fans another Yildirim-type farce.

The Berlanga fight sucks but Berlanga's record looks like Oscar De La Hoya's next to Will Skulls.
