WBC cruiserweight champ Giacobbe Fragomeni will defend the title November 21 in Kiel, Germany, against no other than Zsolt Erdei, reigning WBO light heavyweight ruler. It´s a surprising move by Erdei to step up in weight as he in the past always looked as if he could make super middleweight rather than move up in weight. There have been rumors of Erdei instead defending the title against interim title holder Juergen Braehmer on this date and site. [details]

This is really strange. Erdei is too small to be a cruiser, but again Fragomeni isn't exactly the largest cw either. Still, he has more muscles.WBC cruiserweight champ Giacobbe Fragomeni will defend the title November 21 in Kiel, Germany, against no other than Zsolt Erdei, reigning WBO light heavyweight ruler. Erdei-Fragomeni makes more sense. This way Universum gets two champions. Braehmer steps in as WBO light heavyweight champ and Erdei avoids fighting him. Erdei fights, at home, against the 40-year-old, light punching Italian for a cruiserweight belt. The judges give him a UD and Universum picks up another belt. Erdei goes on to spend a few more years defending in Germany against horrid opposition in a whole new division.Originally posted by CarnivoreI can't imagine Fragomeni-Erdei will happen.
I've heard Erdei will be fighting Braehmer.
Actually, it's brilliant strategy when your only goal is to collect as many belts as possible and fill arenas with ticket-buyers willing to watch champions beat up nobodies.Comment

this would mean that Erdei is going to not only be taking a risk but also fighting someone with a pulse. Not happening...Comment

As I see it, Erdei is simply being pushed out of his title by his own promoter.
Erdei has proved to be a competent champion, but boring, and he does not attract the German viewers to the tv-screens. And he's Hungarian, not German.
The Universum people are desperately trying to cling onto some kind of German tv-deal (their present deal expires at the end of this year). Without that, they will not survive.
For that purpose, they need a German profile, especially after the escape of a guy like Felix Sturm. They obviously think that Brähmer (who is popular in Germany) can fill some of the void, so they push him into the full title.
They give Erdei a chance to remain a champion by giving him a shot at a cruiserweight title. But he is very much a natural lightheavy who usually weighs in at 2-3 pounds below the limit.Comment
