Comments Thread For: Paulie Malignaggi's Picks: The Fight With Declining Canelo Looks To Have Come A Year Too Early For Improving Munguia

If it can't be David Benavidez, Jaime Munguia's a solid challenger to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday - he's a top five super middleweight. The all-Mexican element of Canelo-Munguia, in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo weekend, also gives it another element - not least because Mexican fans are the most vocal in this part of the world. The timing of Saturday's fight makes it interesting. Munguia, 27, has defensive flaws but he seems to be getting better and better, and the appointment of Freddie Roach as his trainer can only benefit him. It's also increasingly being questioned whether Canelo is as good, and as hungry, as he once was. Munguia - who looks very hungry, because he can detect the potential superstardom within his reach - is edging closer to the top of the 168lbs division, but is he still easy enough to hit that Canelo can pick him off between the punches that Munguia throws? Canelo remains a quality fighter, but can he still avoid it becoming difficult in there against Munguia, and if he can't, does he have the desire to win a difficult fight?

    Damn Paulie
Based on your recent wrong predictions
I'm worried now for Canelo because Munguia might actually win this fight

Canelo hand picked Munguia, the outcome was never in question. Maybe it's me but I'm just not into watching Jar Jar Binks beaten unconscious by a narcissistic bully that doesn't give 2 shyts about boxing. I genuinely like Paulie but to insinuate that Mungia isn't there to be knocked out is a form of malpractice.

I suspect Paulie’s assessment of the fight will be closer than yours come fight night. I think Munguia will do better than people think and Canelo will find it harder than most people expect. What has Canelo done in his last 3 fights to suggest he’ll stop Munguia either quickly or easily? nothing. He hasn’t shown that sort of form for years now.

Mungiua has repeatedly shown the ability to recover quickly from heavy shots. Dev battered him but he still came back strong. Ryder landed hard shots but he walked through them. Not so sure Canelo is hitting as hard as he used to. His recent fights suggest not. He couldn’t put Ryder away why will he stop Munguia?

Paulie, when you fought Cotto, you showed true cojones. You did not fought to preserve your value, you fought to preserve your life and that night in P.R. you earned a lot of respect from true boxing fans.By the way, keep the good matches in Plank City, I been there a couple of times, they are great and thanks for donating to VET-TIX!

Mungiua is a one dimensional come forward fighter with no defense or footwork, he is literally tailor-made for a counter puncher with heavy hands.

This fight isn’t going to be like the fights canelo had Europeans. This is a legit tuff fight with MEXICAN who’s young and hungry. If canelo doesnt ko Mung early. He’s in for a long night but if it’s close. They will of course give it to Canelo. Mung needs to beat the crap out of him almost every round or KO to win.

Incorrect on a few points. Rewatch his fights. He quite capable of being light on his feet and his co-ords are good. If you think he’s just a come forward slugger the. you simply haven’t watched his fights carefully enough. He’ll stand and trade yes and his defence is porous although improving. He gambles he’ll out punch you and youth is on his side with this one.

Canelo now is the one with slow feet and I expect Roach’s gameplan to exploit that over the first 6. Munguia will be on his toes letting Canelo expend energy as endurance is achilles heel. If it goes past 6 Canelo will fade and most likely loose.
