Done! Christy Martin v Lucia Rijker!
By Flattop
“It’s almost a miracle but Bob Arum deserves all the credit,” stated Brian Young of Prize Fight Promotions in confirming to ********* that Christy Martin and Lucia Rijker will have their long awaited showdown on July 9th at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The title of the event - MILLION DOLLAR LADY! – describes in plain words how the deal was finally accomplished: Each fighter will receive $250,000 and the winner will collect a bonus of $750,000 making the victor a MILLION DOLLAR LADY! “It is the first time there has been a million dollar purse in women’s boxing and these ladies deserve the money. They are living legends who contributed a lot to women’s boxing with their blood, sweat and tears.” Young recognized promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank for making the deal. “Bob did a spectacular job putting the fight together. It is almost a miracle after all of these years that the fight can be made.” Young stated that the fight will be promoted “entirely” by Top Rank and that Prize Fight would be assisting with the event coordination.

Bad blood has flowed between Martin and Rijker for nearly eight years with both causal and hardcore fans wanting to see the contest. Tension was so high that the two traded punches in an out-of-the-ring altercation in February 2000 outside the Los Angeles Boxing Gym during a press conference for Martin. Even Martin’s longtime promoter Don King was unable to make the eagerly anticipated matchup but the fans never gave up hope that two of the most popular female boxers in women’s fisticuffs would one day meet. “There is as much interest in a fight between Christy and Lucia now as there was years ago. These two ladies are legends. They don’t like each other and they have their own fans. It’s Ali vs. Frazier all over again except it’s women.” Martin signed the agreement on Friday evening and Rijker finalized her contract on Saturday morning. Young, who was part of Team Martin during the negotiations, also gave praise to Emmanuel Steward for representing Rjker and “bringing both sides together.” It is believed that the contractual weight will be 142 pounds “plus or minus a pound.”
