I've heard of promoters like Don King taking a 30% cut as the promoter, making sure his fighter used one of Don's trainers(Stacey McKinley, etc) for another 10% cut, and then 10% for a manager. Then King would deduct training expenses(sparring partners), travel expenses, hotels, food, fees, etc. He could take a 60% cut of a fighter's purse. Some jurisdictions might take 25% out for taxes right off the top. Some fighters might be left with 15% of the purse. Maybe that's why Buster Douglas said he only got a million out of his 20 million fighting Holyfield as the champion.
