Caballero's Promoter: "No Juanma Offer Ever Made"

Contrary to some of the reports being printed, Celestino Caballero's promoter Leon Margules tells BoxingScene.com that a unification bout with Juan Manuel Lopez has never been offered by Top Rank. Margules was angered by a few reports that claimed Caballero's team had priced themselves out by requesting too much money. Caballero sat ringside on Saturday at the WaMu Threater in Madison Square Garden, and watched Lopez pull out a very tough decision over Rogers Mtagwa. Top Rank's Bob Arum told numerous media outlets that $150,000 was on the table for Caballero to fight Lopez on January 23 in Puerto Rico. That offer, according to Margules, was never made to him. Looking like this fight isn't going to happen.

Lopez is learning from his boy Cotto about not ever trying to get a fight with a guy who is ranked #1 or #2 in a division and going after watered down titles (Ponce had already been beaten by Cab) instead of becoming the linear champ. At least Cotto plants his feet in one division though, and doesn't openly turn down fighters like Lopez is doing.

And the Caballero team keeps the pressure on like they should.

Man this sucks. I wanted to see this fight but juanma can't go back in Jan and have a fight with cab. That would b his first loss. Maybe for late feb early march but he needs a break after last night

Well, they went with someone who had no business anywhere near a title fight after the rest of Juanma's awful matchmaking recently and almost blew it. I expect them to go gravedigging next.

The thing is Caballero is making all kinds of concessions and still nothing.

I thought his team was right in that they can make this fight cheaper than a Luevano one.

                Marguiles sounds very willing.

Exactly. This is why boxing sucks sometimes. The guy was exposed, he is vulnerable and because of that they will hide him, feed him bums until he's a nice 40-0 and finally they will feed him to a decent champion who will tear him apart in half a round (but not before the crazy boxing fans waste 50 bucks on a "mega fight" PPV named like Battle of the 0's or something... It's very sad but we see more and more fighters getting to the top via the short way...

I told everybody he was just talking and would not fight Cabellero. Arum has been known for ages to protect fighters, he's smart, its an investment and he is going to milk that cow as long as he can. His fighters never take risks until theyve fought another fighter of his first so he can maximize his earnings. Cotto/Marg, Pac/Cotto, the list goes on and on, its smart but it sucks for us fans. And I also told everyone JuanMa wasnt that good, he's just big for the division.
