Why didn't Mike Tyson face hard hitting Melton Bowen

Have you guys heard of him? How Good was he? Gate keeper or better? https://boxrec.com/en/box-pro/5116

I was thinking about Tysons opponents under Rooney. The only hard hitter they put up against him was Bone Crusher Smith, but he started boxing late and was not considered a threat to Tyson.

Melton was active during Tysons time.

When was he supposed to fight Tyson? Mike was world champion before this guy even turned pro and by the looks of his record he was never a contender.

I’m no expert on boxing in the late 80’s, early 90’s as I was a young kid back then but I don’t recall Melton Bowen ever being relevant or in line for any big fights.

Former World Champion Tony Tubbs. Not really comparable to some club fighter is it?

He got knocked out by a guy with 3 losses in 9 fights .

The only reason anybody even mentions him is because he was the first real boxer to fight in the UFC not wearing ****** boxing gloves ( Art Jimmerson ) and had a very entertaining fight however getting pummeled by UFC 3 champion Steve Jennum on the ground before losing to a submission via arm lock from mount .

Bowen was physically strong but he only fought one legit guy and took another knockout loss to Carl Williams by then Tyson was already heading off the road in the direction of Buster Douglas .

Interesting note Bowen was the FIRST ever to wear MMA gloves in 1994 before they became customary .

I remember some article about him back in the day. I think he was allegedly like 172-6 as an amateur. I followed him for awhile cuz he seemed like he might go somewhere but ultimately he came up short in his biggest fights & his record is very manufactured looking at it today. He was 35-9 overall, with 25 wins over guys with non-winning records. Sh^t 10 of the 35 guys he beat hadn't won a fight yet altho maybe boxrec is just lacking on older fighters records. So he was a very poor 10-9 vs guys with winning records.

This thread is useless, believe me this Melton wasn't a contender and this is the first time I heard of him. By the way, Tyson fought Tucker, Smith, Carl Williams, Bruno, Ruddock, Botha, Thomas, stewart, they were all heavy hitters.
