  • Cotto Looking Razor sharp in traning!!!

By Luis Santiago Arce / larce@elnuevodia.com

Smoothly, and with a work plan to the letter, now focused on refining the game plan, the Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto is in its third week in Tampa quartering towards his megafight next November 14 in Las Vegas against Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

"It has all gone very well here. Thank God everything goes on smoothly, very well. Miguel is very good, he is happy and in good spirits, which is important, "said Cotto's trainer yesterday, Joe Santiago to El Nuevo Dia after completing a day's work out at the Tampa Fight Factory Gym.

"Miguel is razor sharp. We have covered all the objectives we have outlined in these first three weeks, "he added, while enjoying some leisure time in spring training facilities of the New York Yankees, but Cotto was resting.

It's the second straight time that 'Team Cotto' were quartered in that city on the east coast of Florida. The last time was for the defense that he made for the welterweight World Boxing Organization (WBO) title last June 13 in New York against Joshua Clottey Africa.

"Everything is running more or less the same. The only thing different is the strategic plan we are working now. We will deal with a southpaw boxer with great hand speed, and for that we are preparing, "said Santiago, in stating that the plan includes the traditional morning runs and fitness, along with technical work in the evenings.

At the gym we are sparring on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with floor exercises on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, taking Sunday as a day off.

And for the sparring, based on the characteristics of Pacquiao, we have recruited veteran, Frederick Tukes, along with another pair of fighters who declined to identify, without ruling out that further integrate the New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent, Frankie "El Gato" Figueroa subject to his own professional commitments.

"That's the key, the sparring. That's as close to the fight. That's where you can develop the strategy for fighting, "Santiago said, without offering specifics, but unconcerned about the quality of the training partners of 'Pac-Man', which in the coming days in the Philippines will join former world champion Mexican Jose Luis Castillo.

"They just have to do the job, one wants to do. Not necessarily be a great name boxers. There are many fighters in the yard doing a fine job, "he added.

Cotto doesn't really talk much. I can kinda tell he likes to keep himself away from the limelight even though this is the biggest fight of his life perhaps.
