Mayweather-Pacquiao is Mission Impossible, Arum Barks

Mayweather-Pacquiao is mission impossible, Arum barks

October 7, 6:48 PMNY Boxing ExaminerMichael Marley

Unless you catch him wearing a sleeveless barong you never really know what’s up the slick sleeve of fight promoter Bob Arum.He hasn’t dominated professional boxing over four decades because he’s a poor poker player. When it comes to boxing politricks or trickeration, Arum is a grandmaster.
“Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth.” You don’t have that as your most famous quote unless a champion of deception and chicanery.

Arum changes with the wind, I admit, but as of Wednesday night I’m thinking he has no intention of putting Manny Pacquiao into the ring against Floyd Mayweather. Yeah, you heard me. Marley just flipped his script, again… But, based on Arum’s verbiage at Madison Square Garden. I have to.

Even if Pacman jumps the large hurdle that is Miguel I’m No Angel Cotto Nov. 14, Arum thinks that outrageous demands by Mayweather will prevent the mega match from coming to fruition. On this score, Arum is not just howling at the moon. Remember that Mayweather is a former client of Arum’s Top Rank who left bitterly and sued Uncle Bobby. Right now, at least, Arum wants to play the “bad cop” role.

“Nobody is going to get down on their knees to get it done,” Arum said. “The winner of Cotto-Pacquiao can go and fight Shane Mosley, something I don’t think Mayweather will ever do. “There’s no way to have a real dialogue with Mayweather. Am I schmuck?”

Before I could answer that, Arum kept up his tough guy line of patter.
Why couldn’t Arum sit at the Table Of Brotherhood and yodel with Golden Boy’s Richie Rich Schaefer, the former Swiss banker? “No, let them bring me a signed piece of paper, signed by Mayweather,” Arum said. “I negotiate with Schaefer and then he goes to Mayweather and then comes back to me with a different demand. They come to me with a signed piece of paper and then, and only then will I consider it.”
“Even with Al Haymon, it would be the same thing. I won’t play those games.”

Arum charged that Mayweather’s real game is to pick on a few patsies and then retire with his unbeaten record intact.

“That’s Mayweather’s legacy, that’s what it’s all about. He will not take a chance like a fight against either Cotto or Pacquiao. He will be content to fight Joe Blow, do about 800,000 PPV TV buys.
“Mayweather will never, ever fight Mosley because he knows that’s the toughest fight out there for him.”
Mark Arum’s words and mark them well.
But, never forget, the Indian Rubber Man is not as versatile and flexible as Robert Arum.
